If you are getting a new dog that has long fur you need to learn how to take proper care of their coat. If you do not it can easily become matted which will make it difficult to take care of. Keep reading so you can keep your dog's coat healthy and looking beautiful with pet grooming

See a Groomer

One of the most important things you can do is take your dog to a groomer. Find one groomer that you like so you can keep using the same one. This way your dog will become much more comfortable working with just one groomer.

The groomer will bathe your dog, comb their fur, and dry the coat. They can take care of any mats that may have developed, which is important to do while they are still small. If your dog has a special coat the groomer will know the right techniques to use to clean their fur.

Along with grooming the groomer can also trim your dog's nails, clean their ears, clean and trim paw pads, and some can even express anal glands. The groomer will use cologne on your dog to make it smell great.

Bathe Your Dog

You should also bathe your dog on your own. Your groomer can tell you how often you should do this. Because your dog has long hair, debris and dirt can get in it. This can make your dog's fur get tangled much easier. If you have a small dog, you can wash them in a sink. If your dog is larger, you will have to use your bathtub, or you can purchase a portable dog tub for them.

Ask a vet or the groomer for the best type of shampoo to purchase for your dog. This is especially important if your dog has skin issues or sensitive skin. First, make sure their hair is completely wet down to the skin then work the shampoo in with your fingers until you have cleaned all of their coat. Rinse out the shampoo until you are sure it is all gone. Purchase a conditioner along with shampoo to make your dog's coat easier to brush.

Dry your dog off with a towel and let them air dry or if you can use a blow dryer on the cool and low setting if your dog will allow you to do this. Just be ready for the shake when they first get out of the water.

Along with grooming and bathing, comb your dog's fur on a regular basis. The groomer can suggest the best dog brush and give you brushing tips.
