One of the most important things that you can do when choosing to buy a dog from a breeder is to make sure that you are only working with a responsible breeder. The last thing that you want is to give your business to a backyard breeder that does not take care of the dogs and is actively over breeding them, which is incredibly unhealthy for the dogs. Listed below are three ways to spot a reputable dog breeder.

The Breeder Invites You To Tour His Or Her Facility

One of the biggest ways to spot a reputable dog breeder is if the breeder will invite you to tour his or her facility when trying to get a puppy. Most backyard breeders will typically offer to meet you somewhere or bring the puppy to you in order to keep you away from his or her facility or home, mostly because he or she does not want you to see the poor living conditions that he or she keeps the dogs in. However, a reputable dog breeder will want you to visit the facility in order to meet the parents of the puppy that you want and to let you see the clean and comfortable conditions in which he or she keeps the dogs.

The Breeder Will Question You

Another way to spot a reputable dog breeder is if he or she decides to question you before letting you have a dog or puppy. A reputable breeder is very concerned about the welfare of all of the puppies that come out of his or her breeding program or facility, which means that he or she will want to know if the puppy is going to be well taken care of and that the prospective owner knows what he or she is getting into. In addition, the breeder will also expect you to sign contracts that will require you to spay or neuter your dog as soon as he or she is old enough and that you will return the dog to the breeder if you cannot keep the puppy or if things don't work out.

The Breeder Will Not Guarantee That You Will Get A Puppy

Finally, you will be able to tell if a breeder is reputable based on whether or not he or she will guarantee that you will get a puppy at any time. In most cases, a reputable breeder is not going to ever guarantee that you will get a puppy by a certain time period, holiday, or whenever you happen to just walk in to try to get the puppy.

The reason for this is that reputable breeders do not over breed their dogs, which means that they have limited puppies for sale throughout the year. If you find a breeder that will guarantee that you will get a puppy whenever you like, such as by advertising that they have puppies available for Christmas or that they always have puppies available, there is a really strong chance that the individual is a backyard breeder who is over breeding his or her dogs.

Contact a local dog breeder today in order to discuss what it would take for you to be eligible to adopt one of his or her puppies and to determine if he or she is a reputable breeder. A reputable breeder will invite you to tour his or her facility, will question you before allowing you to adopt one of his or her dogs, and will not guarantee that you will get a puppy at any time.
